A project by ‘Nishqam’ , the social service club of CITM

A dream of few is now on its way to reality. “Swapan” to educate the children of those workers who are constructing our campus buildings. These children were completely blank on the name of education. They are given basic education through daily classes of 1 hr duration. It emphasizes on bridging the gap between ignorance and knowledge.

HOW WE STARTED IT?

One day we went to the slum in which the families of these construction workers live. It may be surprising for some, but there is a slum inside our campus walls. We went there to know how many of them go to school. We met all the families. And none of the families has an income of more than Rs 120. Each family has an average of 4 children and no one of them were going to school. In total, there were nearly 25-30 students. We decided to teach them through daily classes of an hour.

HOW DID WE PROCEED?

We asked the management to give us a room in Girl’s Hostel but we were refused the place on the security basis. So, first day we taught them in the veranda of the Girls hostel’s washerwoman’s house. Then with the real help of Col J P Suri Sir, we got a room in Dental College. That was a big success as now we not only had a roof to teach but that room was a proper classroom.

LITTLE PROBLEMS WE CONFRONTED:

We are teaching them regularly 5-6 pm in G8 room of Dental College. As there are 25-30 children. All of them are from different age group and they all have different learning speed. So, we can’t teach all of them in a group. At least 3 of us go there every day to teach. Now we realized that the best way to make them learn is by sending them to proper school.

TEACHING AIDS:
We gave all of them a small “kayada”, stationery and a notebook. We also pasted certain pictures on thermocoal sheet to enhance their memorizing speed. We taught them few poems and 2 lines of a prayer to start with. Three boys are given hardware education so that they can come out of the chain of labourers.

HELP FOR THE CHILDREN:

In the chilling winters also, they had hardly anything to wear. Some of them were even barefooted. So, we all hostel volunteers collected clothes and shoes. Twice we went to the slum and distributed the clothes. Col J P Suri Sir gave foot wears to those who were barefooted. Sometimes we distributed toffees and sweets too.

OUR NEXT STEP:

We are now planning to send them to school. We searched a few schools in Faridabad. Instead of government we will send them to a private school. In the mean while, we gave a presentation of Swapan project to the director Mr. M. K Soni and he truly appreciated our effort and promised us to help with anything possible. Next day, Mr. Amit Bhalla visited our teaching place and with appreciation, he has agreed to provide 2 teachers and 2 rooms to provide these children, proper formal education.

Now we call everyone to be a part of this education drive..
